The World's News - Journey through the fields of broken dreams in the global economic arena

Same old song - we need R&D to restore jobs

December 6th 2009 03:54
The broken record keeps playing the same old song - We need hi-tech, research and development and new energy saving endeavors for job creation

We have heard the same old story for years about revamping our economy.
For years, the pundits tell us we need more research and technoloy to
initiate jobs for the future and to replace the industrial jobs that
were exported to other lands. This in itself is a fabrication since many
high tech jobs went overseas too. It is nonsense to have research
and development if production is sent overseas. President Obama talks
about the creation of "green" jobs but if this new industry is like all
of the rest, the factories that produce the components will be somewhere
else other- not in

the U.S.

All jobs should be declared a priority since only about 20 percent of
high school graduates go to college. Even R& is restricted to
university levels which provide jobs for only a few. Usually these jobs
are government supported which means workers pay the bill. Our region
was once a center of high technology but most of these companies closed
down due to foreign competition. The high technology still exists but
the companies and production are somewhere else.

The same applys to most anything we use. We use or eat it but someone
else in a far away place makes or grows it. They told us a new service
economy would come. It came and it went too. ( see Job hunting in never never land It created a vast new working poor class who now find even the cheaper imports too expensive for their budgets. Many retail workers in places like Walmart need government money and
assistance to survive.

In Cleveland, they talk about the new medical center that is coming and
say this will revive the region. This won't work because the medical
industry depends on government support and this means workers again have
to pay the bill. An economy can not put a cart before the horse and
expect the horse to push the cart.

President Obama in cart before the horse
President Obama should at least get out of the cart and help the horse push the cart

Our Northern Ohio region, like many others in the U.S. once was a center of both high
technology and factories with many international corporate offices
downtown. Now they are gone. The first order of business is to find out
why. The simple answer is free trade that was never really trade. It was
really all about exporting production and making it portable ready to be
moved again and again seeking the lowest levels in cheap labor. It has
become an endless surge to the bottom. The stock market thrived on
people getting fired instead of hired. They forgot that labor is a core
money value and the core of all society.

And while the pundits talk about energy saving devices and cleaning up the
environment, old freight ships, trains and trucks full of imports travelling thousands of
miles polluting the air and consuming energy. Energy saving light bulbs travel
8000 miles to get to the marketplace from polluting factories in China. See Philly Future - Dark side of energy
saving light bulbs - story

Nothing makes sense but President Obama like the past three presidents ignores the real causes behind our economic and clean air crisis. They call it free trade, but it wasn't free
at all. Now with the bailouts, free trade has put tariffs on generations to come.
