Mother chooses dog over two year old son

February 3rd 2008 20:22
(OK, the headline is a bit sensationalist... it's not like she kicked the kid out of his home. But that's what the news channels would love to put as their headline!)

Earlier this week a story made headlines when a mother blamed her son for being 'mauled' by the family dog.

The dog, a mastiff-staffy cross, bit the boy leaving a large cut near one of his eyes. The son was playing with the dog, pulling her ears. The mother warned him repeatedly to stop. Finally the five year old dog turned around and bit the boy badly. She called triple 000 after the attack, and the boy was treated for facial injuries. She has refused to put the dog down, inciting a deluge of media frenzy after the story was covered by Sydney's Daily Telegraph. She even had to call the police when one tv crew refused to leave her property.

It's a story that invokes emotion. A two year old does not have the sense or smarts to leave a dog alone. The mother claims that the dog had always been tolerant with her son. She's now copping a rally of criticism against her mothering skills that would send any parent into a tailspin.

"It's not like the dog picked him up and shook him or anything, she just snapped at him for pulling on her ears," she said.

"She's a good dog, I've never had any problems with her before and I don't think it's her fault."

The Paramedics called to the scene said he was lucky to have few injuries, given his size compared with the dog.

There are no laws that demand the dog be destroyed, as it happened on the property of the dog's owner. The mother is now considering keeping the dog at her boyfriend's place.

Oh yeah... the dog weighs 50 kg!

It's an interesting question - how might the mother have reacted if the injuries to her son had been more serious - like he'd lost an eye or was facially deformed, or even had died... ? My son was bitten on his head by a Labrador - supposed to be very child-friendly, when he was just 2, and the owner was mortified and got rid of the dog - she had three kids herself and didn't want to take any chances. Animals are unpredictable. Not sure if her faith in her pooch is justified when it's the little guy who stands to suffer if the dog goes psycho.

Can we address the true culprit here--the mother? Instead of telling her 2-year-old to stop pulling the dog's ears, she should have stopped him herself!!

Neither the dog nor the toddler are to blame. The responsibility for the incident rests solely on the mother's shoulders. I get so tired of hearing stories like this where irresponsible adults walk away and the animal is destroyed, or the public feels that the animal should be destroyed.
