Iranian women to be given their own holiday island escape

Tehran announced today that it is trying to create the first female-only resort island to help booster the area's tourism industry.

Iran's extreme segregation laws forbid men from mixing with women in public. Women have to be completely covered when in public in long loose clothing and wear headscarves. Iran has set up special beach areas for women so they can remove their headscarves and wear swimmers without breaking the law. There are also special 'women parks' as well.

The island would be completely managed and serviced by women. It'll be located on an island on Iran's Urumiyeh lake.

The initiative has even been cleared by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's provincial representative, who declared that a women-only island is not against Islamic Sharia Law, the official said.

There will be no men allowed on the island whatsoever. Bus drivers, doctors, restaurant staff, everything will be run by women.

Probably a great opportunity for some wild girlie weekends! When I first so the headline I was expecting some bizarre twist on Tempation island!

More about Iran's segregation laws:

Previously, Iran's Parliament has passed laws prohibiting news media from using women's pictures on the front page, and banning discussions of women's issues and rights except by the ruling clerics of the Shari'a (Islamic law). The ban covers activists, journalists, writers, and anyone else interested in women's issues. (source: iranian.com)

Apparently, medical services in the country are also completely segregated. Women can only be treated by female doctors and medical staff. The same rule applies for dentists and other health services.

On the flip side, Iranian women reportedly have a majority in Iranian educational institutions and Universities. Women have a presence in Iran's parliaments, city councils and cabinet. However they still face many segregations and pressures as mandatory hijab and they are not allowed to sing (except for chorus) in public and also attend soccer stadiums. (Source: Wikipedia)

this will not help women's movement in iran, it only aides segregation.
