President Obama promotes the passing of more free trade agreements as " jobs programs. How can he say this after the U.S. has gone through the most massive dislocation of jobs in its history with millions losing their jobs.
Youngstown University Workers Studies reports that the U.S. "defacto" unemployment rate is close to 30 percent. At the same time a new working poor class has replaced much of the middle class workers.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich has this to say about President Obama labeling free trade agreements as job programs.....
Kucinich Calls Out Obama’s Misrepresentation of Trade Bills as Jobs Bills
Washington D.C. (August 11, 2011) – Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement in response to President Obama’s remarks trying to pass off free trade agreements with Korea, Panama and Colombia as "jobs" programs.
"We know that free trade agreements have proven to be catastrophic for the American economy and American workers. They prioritize the rights of multinational companies over the rights of workers and result in significant domestic job losses," Kucinich said.
“Trade will create jobs alright: for Korean and Colombian people who need jobs. Trade with the U.S. has created millions of jobs in China. How about a trade agreement which will have a net gain for American workers?! The Economic Policy Institute estimates that the U.S.-Korea (KORUS) and U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreements will eliminate or displace 214,000 jobs and are likely to increase the U.S. trade deficit by $16.9 billion. Since 2001, the U.S. has lost 5.3 million jobs in the manufacturing sector as a result of the United States’ trade deficit.
“The nation’s unemployment rate continues to hover well above 9 percent. We must promote fair trade deals that create jobs and protect American workers and their basic rights to organize instead of providing more incentives to American companies to ship them overseas.
“I urge President Obama to finally take a stand on enforceable workers rights, human rights and environmental quality principles in our trade agreements and to put workers rights on par with the rights of investors. The President must tell the truth about our trade laws and our deficit and not pretend that new trade agreements will do anything to stop the rising unemployment in America."
