C-span TV network is a good outlet for real news in the USA but it still passes on fabrications
A few days ago, I watched Barry Bosworth of Brooking Institute ( C-span has many so called experts from various institutes which are really are part of the Bewildered New World of Globalists ) as he fabricated the old protectionism line about tariffs being the cause of the Great Depression. Usually, I just watch and wonder as lies like this are presented as facts and turn to another TV channel. ( Actually there are no real news channels left in the USA that report objectively.) However since the town meetings of late seem to be stirring things up a bit, I sent a letter into C-span noting how Barry Bosworth and others should adapt to the real needs of our times. The U.S. has gone through the most massive dislocation of jobs in U.S. history including the Great Depression. The unemployment rate is a sham especially if compared to past reporting in the 1970s etc. where primarily only full-time jobs were the major statistic reported.
The one trade act used as example by these "institute" guys is the Smoot Hawley act. It is given as the cause of the Great Depression even though it was not passed until after the stock market crashed in 1929 and few nations in the world had any money left to support any kind of trade. Overall trade and tariffs were mute issues. The cause of the Great Depression was due to a money crisis and the money monopoly games of the stock market and investment communities - much of the same applys today.
President Obama has bailed out big money, banks the stock market, investment companies and credit cards company but ignored the little people who lost their jobs and homes. When free trade acts were passed in the 1990s, the people who lost their jobs due to free trade were promised help. It never came. Help has come only to the money people who caused the problems in the first place.
The Smoot Hawley act actually never got off the ground and President Roosevelt received the power to lower or raise tariffs at will about a year after it was passed. However, he realized that it was a futile process since trade was curtailed by the lack of money everywhere in the world. He said he was not going to let the lack of dollars stand in his way and ramped up U.S. industry and farming by the passing of the Lend Lease act. He supplied the allies with goods and food without worrying about payments. This carried into World War 2 which kicked in the most awesome industrial might in history. However it was all based on local value added economies and not so called free trade that moves production from place to place for the sake of cheaper labor and profiteering. Back then they would have laughed if you called free trade trade. They launched The Marshall Plan and the GI Bill based on the powerful resources available due to the U.S. awesome industrial might. The Marshall Plan demonstrated how the whole world economy could have been realistically expanded through local value added economies in balanced geopolitcal settings.

President Obama now follows in the footsteps of our last two former Globalist presidents. He never mentions free trade and globalization as the cause of our economic crisis. C-span needs to figure out who they really are.
