The World's News - The hard facts about the the global economic arena

Free Trade is not trade. It is primarily about moving production from place to place anywhere in the world for the sake of cheaper labor. The value of workers and labor has been degraded and deflated. This represents trillions of dollars lost in the process

Ban-aid economy will not work

January 11th 2011 21:39
Our Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper put this headline on its business pages..

These new cars will be delivering work to factories in Ohio, including Parma

This is a good thing but it only puts a ban-aid on the economy and does very little to help restore our local economy. Here are some other articles related to this. Billions of taxpayers money was given to foreign auto companies to build their assembly plants in the USA. One state even paid for a airport runway near a new factory so that planes could bring in parts from outside of the USA.

Honda, Toyota etc coming to America - Made in USA passe
American workers pay for foreign auto factories. 2000 assembly jobs created
as 20,000 U.S. auto parts workers lose their jobs in the state.

Here is the real story behind the headline - The term Made in the USA is not used. They do not even use the terms Built in the USA or Assembled in the USA. And nothing is said about many of the cars being subsidized by governments in some way.

President Franklin Roosevelt said economic diseases are highly communicable.

Free trade is a creeping economic cancer. The term Made in the USA applys to an automobile that is manufacturered in the USA with at least 90 percent
of all parts and machining made or done in the USA. I doubt if there are
any auto manufacturers left who do this in America .

Reportedly, 60 percent of the Honda car goes back to Japan. Many states
in the USA have paid millions of dollars to foreign companies to built
their assembly plant in the USA. On top of this some of these autos are
subsidized by their governments too. In Indiana, Honda taxpayers paid
about 160 million for the Honda Plant that only employs about 5,000
workers with thousands of auto production workers losing their jobs and
a middle class living. This happened while about 20,000 auto parts
production workers lost their jobs in Indiana alone.

It is a no win situation no matter how you look at it.

In the first wave of free trade, more then 400,000 workers in the auto
industry lost their jobs along with about 700,000 workers in the steel
industry. In a second wave more lost their jobs as the foreign auto
makers came to the U.S. Only a fraction of workers have replaced these
losses and they make about one half the auto production workers once
made. All this money is gone. There is little solace that a few more
people will get work. I wonder how many of these families need
government assistance to survive.

When some one buys a car now, the money quickly fans out to where the
products are made and this means it goes somewhere else in the world to
grow other economies and foreign investments, not ours. The largest employers in Cleveland are the Federal Government, State Government, County Government and Local Governments followed by Boards of Education and the Medical industry. All depend on taxpayers to support these services. How can this work when the workers who pay the taxes no longer make enough to do it. I wonder how many need food stamps to survive.

In the future, many will study articles like yours and ask - what were
they thinking?

The Plain Dealer follow the trail of these auto purchases
and see where the money goes. We have an economy that goes around and
around but it comes out somewhere else in the world. Some advertisers
are making more revenues advertising these cars, but ultimately this kind of
money does little in restoring our economy. And auto workers in other parts of the world making a $1 or less an hour have a difficult time surviving.
